Blue Canyon, CA – A strong Pacific system is poised to bring the Sierra’s first significant snow of the season early next week, with a Winter Storm Watch now in effect from Monday afternoon through Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service in Sacramento warns of totals ranging from 2 to 12 inches north of Highway 50 and up to 2 feet farther south, where the brunt of the storm is expected.

According to the NWS Sacramento office, snow levels will drop to near 6,500 feet by Monday afternoon, with heavier bursts possible during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Gusty winds could exceed 35 mph, producing low visibility and occasional whiteout conditions along Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

Caltrans advises drivers to check QuickMap and avoid unnecessary mountain travel during peak snowfall periods. Chains may be required for both eastbound and westbound routes between Auburn and South Lake Tahoe. Forecasters note that confidence in the storm’s track and snow totals remains moderate, but any shift could bring heavier snow farther north or extend hazardous driving into Wednesday.

Residents and travelers should prepare now by checking tire chains, packing emergency gear, and allowing extra travel time if mountain trips are unavoidable. Early-season power outages and tree damage are also possible where snow is wet and heavy.
