Reno, NV – Strong winds are expected across the Sierra and western Nevada today as a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. PDT Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Forecasters warn of southwest winds between 20 and 35 mph, with gusts reaching 55 to 75 mph across much of the region — and ridge-top gusts up to 100 mph possible over the Sierra. The advisory includes the Reno–Carson City–Minden area, the Lake Tahoe Basin, Mono County, Lassen–Plumas–Sierra Counties, and Mineral and Southern Lyon Counties.
Winds are expected to be strongest along US-395, I-580, and through the Lake Tahoe Basin, where waves of 2 to 5 feet may develop on Lake Tahoe, making conditions dangerous for small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards.
“Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” the NWS warned early Sunday. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid mountain travel where possible. High-profile vehicles, including trucks and RVs, should use extreme caution on wind-prone routes.
The advisory will expire by 9 p.m., though gusty conditions may linger into the evening before easing overnight.
