Hanford, Calif. – Thunderstorms are expected to return to Central California early next week, bringing lightning, heavy downpours, and the potential for flash flooding across the Sierra Nevada and desert regions. Drivers and outdoor recreationists should be prepared for sudden weather changes Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, there is a 10 to 20 percent chance of storms developing Tuesday across the Sierra foothills and desert valleys, with threats including small hail, frequent lightning, and gusty, erratic winds. On Wednesday, storm chances decrease slightly to 5 to 15 percent but remain focused on higher elevations, particularly near Yosemite, Mammoth Lakes, and Sequoia National Park.

The Weather Prediction Center also highlights a marginal risk for excessive rainfall on both days, raising concerns for localized flooding in steep terrain, burn scar areas, and slot canyons. Areas from Fresno and Visalia to Bishop and Death Valley could experience rapid runoff in heavy downpours.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities in storm-prone areas, stay clear of creeks and dry washes, and prepare for possible road closures or delays in the mountains. More advisories may be issued if storm coverage increases.
