Shreveport, Louisiana – Drivers along I-20 and I-49 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions by midafternoon Wednesday as strong to severe thunderstorms develop across the ArkLaTex, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail and torrential rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, storms are expected to intensify Wednesday afternoon, especially across northwest Louisiana, northeast Texas and southwest Arkansas. The primary hazards include wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to quarter size or larger and locally heavy rainfall capable of overwhelming drainage systems in a short period of time.

The strongest storms are likely between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., aligning with the late-day commute along I-20 through Bossier City and into Webster Parish. Motorists on I-220 and US-71 may encounter sudden visibility drops under heavy downpours, with rainfall rates potentially exceeding 1 to 2 inches per hour in the most intense cells.

Localized flooding could develop in low-lying areas and underpasses, particularly where storms track repeatedly over the same corridor. While the tornado threat remains lower than the wind and hail risk, an isolated spin-up cannot be ruled out.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, park vehicles in covered areas if possible and ensure multiple ways to receive weather warnings before storms develop. Charge mobile devices in advance and avoid travel during the heaviest rainfall.

Additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms strengthen Wednesday afternoon, with conditions improving later Wednesday night as the system shifts east of the region.
