Shreveport, Louisiana – Sub-freezing temperatures are expected to return across the Shreveport area tonight, with some locations remaining below freezing for 12 hours or longer, increasing the risk for travel issues and cold-related damage.
According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, overnight low temperatures across the Four-State Region are forecast to fall into the 20s, with pockets near or below freezing extending across northwest Louisiana, southeast Oklahoma, and southwest to south-central Arkansas. Portions of southeast Oklahoma and southwest Arkansas are expected to experience the longest duration of freezing conditions.
In the Shreveport metro area, overnight lows are forecast near 29 to 31 degrees, cold enough to cause patchy icy conditions on bridges and elevated roadways, particularly during the late-night and early-morning hours.
Drivers traveling overnight or during the early Tuesday commute should use caution on Interstate 20, Interstate 49, U.S. Highway 71, and U.S. Highway 80, where temperatures near freezing may allow moisture to refreeze. Bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads are most susceptible.
The National Weather Service reminds residents to follow the “5 P’s” of cold weather safety:
Protect People by checking on children, elderly neighbors, and anyone vulnerable to cold;
Protect Pets by bringing them indoors when possible;
Practice Fire Safety by using safe heating sources and ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working;
Protect Pipes by covering exposed pipes, disconnecting hoses, and dripping faucets;
Protect Plants by covering sensitive vegetation or bringing plants indoors.
Officials emphasize that even brief freezes in this region can cause infrastructure and travel disruptions. Residents are encouraged to prepare ahead of time and monitor updates from weather.gov/shv.
Commuters, students, and early-morning workers should allow extra time Tuesday morning and remain alert for cold-related hazards.
