Champaign, IL – Central Illinois will experience scattered showers this morning, especially north of I-72, as a system brings some locally heavy rainfall near and west of the Illinois River. The rain is expected to clear out by early afternoon, setting the stage for a warm, sunny weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, the showers will begin between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Winds will increase out of the northeast at 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Drivers commuting on I-72 or near the Illinois River should be prepared for wet road conditions during the morning hours. While today’s rainfall is the only major event for the near future, breezy conditions will persist into the afternoon.

Saturday’s forecast shows temperatures soaring into the lower-to-mid 80s, with sunshine and stronger southeast winds in the afternoon. Winds could gust up to 24 mph, especially along I-55. Sunday will be cooler, with highs in the upper 70s and more sunshine.

Next week begins with cooler weather, as temperatures dip into the high 60s and low 70s. Monday and Tuesday are expected to be clear and sunny, providing relief from the rain. Commuters should prepare for varying wind speeds, particularly on Saturday, and enjoy calmer weather early next week.
