Kansas City, Mo. – Showers and thunderstorms are expected to return in waves through the weekend, bringing a threat of heavy rain and lightning to much of western Missouri. Travel delays and outdoor disruptions are likely, especially Saturday night into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, storms may redevelop Thursday afternoon and linger into Thursday night, with the strongest activity producing downpours and gusty winds. The chance of rain rises again Saturday and Sunday, with nighttime storms potentially the most widespread.

Friday looks calmer with partly sunny skies, though clouds will increase by evening as the next system approaches. Saturday’s storms could impact highways such as I-70 and I-35, particularly around Kansas City, Independence, and Lee’s Summit. Sunday brings the highest potential for a wet day, with widespread showers and storms persisting into Sunday night.

Residents are urged to monitor forecasts and avoid outdoor activities when thunder is heard. Drivers should be prepared for slick roads and sudden visibility drops in downpours.

The unsettled pattern should ease by Monday as drier and sunnier conditions return, with temperatures holding in the upper 70s and low 80s. More storms could redevelop by midweek.
