Sherburne, NY – Rising water along the Chenango River could push parts of Chenango County into minor flooding beginning Tuesday evening, with agricultural land near Sherburne expected to take on water overnight into Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the Chenango River at Sherburne through early Thursday morning. River levels measured 4.2 feet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday but are projected to climb rapidly and exceed the 8.5-foot flood stage later Tuesday evening.
Forecasters expect the river to crest around 8.7 feet Wednesday morning before gradually receding by Wednesday afternoon. At those levels, water typically spreads across low-lying agricultural land on the west side of Sherburne, though widespread structural flooding is not anticipated with this event.
Residents living near the river should monitor water levels and be prepared for changing conditions overnight. Drivers across Chenango County are urged to avoid flooded roadways, especially near low crossings and rural routes that may collect runoff.
Emergency officials emphasize a simple rule during flood events: turn around when encountering water over roads. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
Water levels should fall below flood stage later Wednesday afternoon, though lingering high flows may continue into early Thursday. Additional river statements from the National Weather Service are expected Tuesday night as conditions evolve.
