Winchester, Virginia – Roads across the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding ridges could turn slick by late afternoon as rain changes to snow between 2 and 5 p.m., creating hazardous travel into early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday for central and eastern Allegany County in Maryland, along with Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Hampshire and Hardy counties. Valley locations are expected to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while ridges above 1,000 feet could pick up 3 to 6 inches. Northwest winds will gust between 30 and 45 mph tonight into Monday, causing blowing snow and visibility under a half mile at times.
Farther east, including Rappahannock, Culpeper, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George and southern Fauquier counties, 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected from 6 p.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Monday as rain transitions to snow this evening.
Interstate 81, Route 50 and mountain roads along Skyline Drive may become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses. The Monday morning commute could be slowed by patchy snow cover and gusty winds.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for real-time road conditions. Snow will taper before sunrise Monday, but icy spots may linger into mid-morning.
