Richmond, Va. – Flash flooding and severe storms could make travel dangerous across Central Virginia through Sunday, with the greatest threat arriving Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected Friday through Sunday, especially across the mountains and Shenandoah Valley. The agency warns that isolated severe weather and scattered flash flooding are possible each day, with an 80% chance of storms Saturday. Morning lows will remain in the upper 60s to low 70s, with daytime highs reaching the 80s across most regions.

Communities from Charlottesville to Harrisonburg should remain alert for rapidly rising waters on roads, especially in flood-prone areas and near streams. Warm, humid air will fuel storm development each afternoon, and heavy rainfall may overwhelm drainage in urban areas. Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and avoid driving across flooded roads — “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Storm chances taper off slightly by Sunday evening, but unsettled weather may linger into early next week.

5-Day Virginia Weather Outlook:

  • Sunday: Scattered storms (50%), highs near 90, humid
  • Monday: Partly cloudy, isolated showers, highs in upper 80s
