Baltimore, Maryland – Snow could begin falling across the Blue Ridge by midmorning Sunday, quickly covering higher elevations and creating hazardous mountain travel before nightfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through late Sunday night for the Northern and Central Virginia Blue Ridge. Forecasters say 5 inches or more of snow are possible, especially above 2,500 feet, with wind gusts reaching 45 mph along exposed ridgelines.
Higher elevations near Skyline Drive, Route 33 and Route 211 could see the most accumulation. Snow-covered pavement and blowing snow may reduce visibility during heavier bursts Sunday afternoon and evening. Strong gusts could snap tree limbs and cause isolated power outages in ridge-top communities.
Lower elevations east of the Blue Ridge may see lighter totals, but mountain routes are likely to deteriorate first as temperatures remain colder at elevation.
Residents and travelers should monitor updated forecasts and consider adjusting plans before conditions worsen. Watches may be upgraded to warnings if confidence increases in heavier snow totals or stronger wind impacts Sunday.
