North Shelby County, TN – A 69-year-old man is dead and a 36-year-old suspect has been arrested following a fatal shooting in the Millington area Monday morning, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 11:06 a.m. to a medical emergency in the 4400 block of Bonnie Brae Drive, near Millington. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies found Randall Taylor, 69, unresponsive inside the home with what initially appeared to be a head injury. Further investigation revealed the injury was the result of a gunshot wound.

Sheriff’s deputies and Shelby County Fire personnel attempted life-saving measures, and Taylor was transported to Methodist North Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced deceased.

Through rapid investigative work, detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit identified Daniel Opitz, 36, as the suspect. Authorities say Opitz allegedly fled the scene before deputies arrived but was located and taken into custody within minutes in the immediate area.

Opitz has been charged with First Degree Murder and Possessing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about a possible motive.
