MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Swimmers and boaters along eastern Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline could face dangerous conditions Saturday, with the National Weather Service warning of 4- to 6-foot waves and strong currents. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Sheboygan and Ozaukee counties this afternoon and evening, where a high swim risk is forecast.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, persistent south-southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, will churn up the lake, creating life-threatening rip currents and pounding surf. Beaches from Milwaukee south through Racine and Kenosha counties will see a moderate swim risk, with waves in the 3- to 5-foot range and hazardous nearshore currents.
Officials urge beachgoers to avoid swimming near piers, break walls, and other structures, where currents can intensify. Those visiting the lakefront should stay well back from the water’s edge and remain vigilant for changing conditions.
These risks are expected to ease overnight, but additional statements could be issued if strong winds persist into Sunday.
