Shapleigh, ME – A 45-year-old homeowner in Shapleigh reported a frightening encounter early Sunday morning after waking up to find an unknown man inside her home on Newfield Road, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say the incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. on November 2. The woman, who had two teenagers at home at the time, told authorities the male had exited the house and was standing on her porch when she contacted police.

Deputy Travis Jones with the York County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly after and located a man matching the homeowner’s description nearby. The suspect was identified as Nicholas Knuppel, 23, of Brunswick.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Knuppel appeared intoxicated and told investigators he believed he had been at a gathering earlier that night in Sanford. Authorities say Knuppel was arrested for criminal trespass and transported to the York County Jail, where his bail was set at $200.

Knuppel has not yet posted bail and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, November 3, at the York Judicial Center in Biddeford.
