Chicago, IL – Gusty winds and scattered snow showers are set to hit northern Illinois today, creating hazardous travel conditions during the evening commute. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. to midnight, with gusts expected to reach up to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Drivers along I-55 and surrounding roadways should prepare for rapidly changing visibility, slick surfaces, and snow-coated roads. Officials recommend reducing speed, allowing extra stopping distance, and avoiding high-profile vehicles on exposed stretches of highway.
The snow showers are expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the greatest impact likely north of Sterling, IL, to Rensselaer, IN. Accumulation will remain under an inch, but strong winds could create dangerous whiteout conditions.
Following today’s storm, the Chicago area will see a sharp drop in temperatures. Thursday morning wind chills could plunge as low as -5°F, with blustery winds continuing into the day. Highs on Thursday will struggle to reach 28°F, while overnight lows fall into the teens.
Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday will bring drier, sunnier conditions, with highs climbing into the upper 30s and low 40s. However, another storm system could bring rain on Sunday as temperatures rise into the upper 40s.
Residents are urged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and take precautions when venturing outside during the advisory period.
