Des Moines, IA – Residents across Iowa should prepare for severe storms beginning after 6 p.m. Sunday, with large hail expected to be the main threat, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines.

Forecasters reported Sunday morning that isolated severe storms are likely to form late in the day, especially across central and northern Iowa. The storms are expected to build in intensity after sunset, bringing the potential for hail large enough to damage vehicles, crops, and rooftops.

According to the NWS, damaging winds will become a greater risk on Monday, September 22, as storms continue to move across the region in the afternoon and evening. The agency has placed much of Iowa under a Level 1 “marginal risk” for severe weather through Monday, noting that the setup could bring repeated rounds of storms into midweek.

Travelers and evening commuters are advised to monitor conditions closely and allow extra time in case of sudden downpours or hail. Residents are also encouraged to move cars into garages and secure outdoor items before storms arrive.

The NWS will continue to provide updated forecasts and alerts as the situation develops.
