Oklahoma City, OK — Oklahoma residents should prepare for a weekend of severe weather, with intense thunderstorms, possible tornadoes, and heavy rainfall expected across the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Norman has issued alerts for central Oklahoma, anticipating hazardous conditions primarily from Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning. Motorists, particularly along I-44, are advised to remain vigilant for flash flooding and poor visibility during heavy downpours.
According to NWS Norman, a strong storm system will bring rounds of thunderstorms beginning late Friday, intensifying Saturday afternoon and peaking overnight. The main threats include damaging winds up to 80 mph, large hail up to the size of quarters, and the potential for tornadoes in areas such as Lawton, Wichita Falls, and Oklahoma City. Flash flooding is also likely, with rain accumulations reaching 6-8 inches in central Oklahoma through Monday, creating a significant flood risk for low-lying areas.
The storm system’s severe potential escalates on Saturday, with a heightened risk of tornadoes primarily around Wichita Falls and Lawton. The tornado threat is forecasted between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m., urging residents to have emergency kits ready and ensure they have access to storm shelters.
In addition to the tornado risk, NWS warns that severe weather timing varies across the region. The most likely window for intense storms in Oklahoma City is between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., while areas further south near Durant may see heightened activity from 11 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. Residents should monitor weather updates throughout the weekend and limit travel in impacted zones during peak storm hours.
Looking ahead, showers will likely persist into Monday, though severe conditions should ease by early morning. Authorities urge residents to stay informed by following updates from NWS Norman and taking appropriate safety measures.
