Atlanta, Georgia – Severe thunderstorms are expected to return to much of Georgia this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and intense lightning posing the biggest threats between 3 and 11 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, areas from Columbus to Gainesville are under a Level 1 marginal risk for severe weather. Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph, with isolated hail and heavy rain also possible as storms develop. Flash flooding and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning could lead to power outages and dangerous travel conditions during the evening commute.
Cities including Atlanta, LaGrange, and Athens should prepare for sudden downpours and potential tree damage. Residents are urged to remain indoors during storms and to secure loose outdoor items. The primary storm window aligns with peak evening activity, increasing risks for those on the roads.
Outside the storms, heat will remain a factor. Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-90s, with heat index values topping out near 101°F. Anyone working or exercising outdoors should stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Storm threats will diminish late Friday night, but more updates may follow if conditions intensify.
