Richmond, VA – Residents across northwest and central Virginia should be prepared for possible strong thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with the greatest risk between 3 and 7 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, most of the state will see partly cloudy skies with highs in the low to mid-80s. However, the northwest corner of Virginia faces a marginal risk of severe weather, meaning a few storms could become strong and produce gusty winds up to 50 mph.
Forecasters said the primary concern will be damaging wind gusts, though overall storm coverage is expected to be limited. The NWS stressed that any storms which develop will likely be isolated and short-lived. Tornado and flash flooding risks remain very low.
The rest of the state can expect warm, mostly clear weather today. High temperatures are forecast to reach 83 degrees in Norfolk, 85 in Williamsburg, and 86 in Richmond and Petersburg, with slightly cooler readings in far northern areas.
Travelers and commuters in northwest Virginia should use caution during the late afternoon hours, when the strongest storms are most likely to occur.
