Albuquerque, N.M. – Residents across northeast and eastern New Mexico should prepare for strong storms this afternoon, with damaging winds and large hail possible from 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Areas from Raton to Tucumcari, Santa Rosa, Clovis, and Portales face the highest threat, while gusty and erratic winds could extend westward into the Albuquerque area.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a slight risk for severe storms is in place for the northeast, including Raton, with a marginal risk extending into east-central and southeastern communities. Storms will move eastward through the evening, with potential wind gusts topping 50 mph, pockets of large hail, and localized blowing dust.

Travelers on I-25 near Las Vegas and I-40 east of Clines Corners should be alert for sudden low visibility and shifting winds. Unsecured outdoor items should be tied down, and high-profile vehicles should avoid exposed stretches during peak gusts.

While the severe risk drops late tonight, another round of marginally severe storms is possible Monday afternoon across the eastern plains.
