Denver, Colo. – Severe thunderstorms could hit northeast Colorado tonight with damaging winds up to 70 mph and hail as large as two inches, raising the risk of hazardous travel and power outages across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, a slight risk for severe storms has been issued for the northeast plains, with marginal risk extending west toward Denver’s southern suburbs and the Palmer Divide. The strongest storms are expected to build late this afternoon and continue through tonight.
Cities including Fort Morgan, Sterling, and Akron are in the zone most likely to see severe conditions, but Denver, Aurora, and Castle Rock may also face impacts if storms push farther west. Large hail could damage vehicles and crops, while gusty winds may bring down tree limbs and power lines. Drivers are urged to use caution on I-25 and I-76, where sudden downpours and reduced visibility may occur.
Conditions will dry out and heat up midweek, with Denver climbing near 96 degrees Wednesday and 98 Thursday. Another round of storms and cooler air is likely to return heading into the weekend.
Severe weather watches and warnings may be issued later today if storms strengthen.
