Duluth, Minnesota – Strong to severe thunderstorms will sweep across Minnesota late Sunday night through Monday evening, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes, and heavy rain to much of the Northland.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, an Enhanced Risk (level 3 of 5) for severe weather stretches from Brainerd and Grand Rapids east to Duluth, with two rounds of storms expected. Main hazards include wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and isolated tornadoes—particularly Monday afternoon and evening. Flash flooding is also a concern, with 1-1.5” of rain widespread and up to 3” possible in some areas.

Cities at highest risk include Brainerd, Hibbing, and Duluth, where power outages, road closures, and property damage are possible. Drivers should avoid travel during storms, charge mobile devices, and secure outdoor items. River and street flooding could quickly develop, especially where heavy thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same areas.

Uncertainty remains regarding the exact placement and strength of the most severe storms, but another surge is possible midday Monday if skies clear. Further updates and advisories could be issued as conditions evolve—residents should monitor local alerts through Monday night.
