Springfield, IL – Strong thunderstorms are moving across west-central Illinois today, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning. According to the US National Weather Service in Central Illinois, the greatest storm coverage will continue into Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning before gradually tapering off.

Forecasters report that a line of storms is pushing southeast, producing wind gusts between 30 and 50 mph with the strongest cells. Scattered lightning has also been observed. While the system is expected to weaken as it moves east, residents are urged to remain cautious. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” the Weather Service advised.

Rain chances will continue across much of the state through Wednesday, with the best chances for showers and storms near and south of Interstate 72 today and east of Interstate 55 on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to stay seasonable, with highs ranging from the low 70s to mid-80s.

By Friday, conditions will turn drier and calmer, with sunshine and highs near 80 degrees expected to return. The quiet weather is forecast to last through the weekend, making for a pleasant start to fall in Central Illinois.

Residents should prepare for possible travel delays during storms, and secure outdoor items that could be blown around by strong gusts.
