Newport, NC – Residents of eastern North Carolina should prepare for potentially severe weather Wednesday, including damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather advisory, warning of storms expected from late morning through early evening.

According to the NWS, wind speeds could reach 55 to 65 mph, posing risks to structures, trees, and power lines. Isolated tornadoes are also possible, particularly near Newport and surrounding areas along Highway 70. The agency recommends securing loose outdoor items and avoiding travel during peak storm activity.

Rain and thunderstorms will likely begin early Wednesday morning and continue through the evening. Gusty winds, with speeds up to 38 mph, could cause power outages and make road conditions hazardous.

After the storms pass, temperatures will drop significantly. Thursday will be mostly clear but cooler, with highs near 52°F and lows around 30°F. Friday and Saturday bring partly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid-50s.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and prepare emergency kits in case of prolonged outages. Travel disruptions along Highway 70 and nearby roads are possible during the storms.
