Springfield, IL – The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather alert for central Illinois, focusing on areas near and south of I-70. The forecast predicts damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes this afternoon and evening, with the most significant risk between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, residents in the affected regions should prepare for wind gusts reaching 60-70 mph and hail up to the size of a quarter. A shelf cloud was observed approaching the Weather Service office early this morning, signaling the onset of the severe weather. The storms are expected to move west to east, bringing the possibility of isolated tornadoes and significant wind damage.

Authorities urge residents to stay indoors and secure outdoor objects to prevent them from becoming projectiles. Additionally, they recommend keeping emergency supplies and staying tuned to local weather updates for real-time information.
