Vermillion, South Dakota – Residents in southeast South Dakota should stay alert this evening as a tornado watch remains in effect for Clay and Union counties until 10 p.m. CDT Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 501 was issued at 3:10 p.m. CDT as conditions become favorable for tornado development across parts of the Missouri River Valley. This includes the cities of Vermillion and Elk Point, where rotating storms may develop rapidly.

The primary threats include isolated tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and hail larger than golf balls. Local emergency management officials urge residents to monitor weather alerts, ensure they have access to shelter, and charge mobile devices in case of power outages. US Highway 50 and I-29 could be impacted by sudden low visibility and debris if storms intensify.

Storms may continue through the evening, with clearing expected overnight. This system follows a pattern of active July weather, similar to last year’s mid-month severe outbreak.

Warnings remain possible through the evening, and additional advisories may be issued. Residents should keep NOAA Weather Radio or emergency apps on alert mode.
