Superior, Wisconsin – Localized severe thunderstorms could strike northern Wisconsin late Sunday afternoon, bringing the potential for large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph. The strongest storms are expected to remain isolated, but any that do form could impact travel and outdoor plans across Ashland, Iron, and Vilas counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, there’s a 40–50% chance for strong to severe storms in northern Wisconsin between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday. Primary hazards include hail up to 1.34 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching severe thresholds. A Level 2 out of 5 risk area covers parts of the northern tier, including Hurley and Bayfield, with localized storm development also possible in adjacent northeast Minnesota.
Elsewhere across the Northland, general non-severe showers and storms are expected through Sunday night, particularly in Duluth, Ely, and Grand Marais, with a lower 20–35% chance of activity. Conditions remain unsettled into Monday, when widespread non-severe storms are forecast across the entire region.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices in case of outages, and stay alert for changing weather conditions.
Severe risk tapers off by late Sunday night, but additional thunderstorm chances return Monday afternoon across the region.
