Roanoke, Virginia – Strong thunderstorms are expected to hammer much of southwest Virginia this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and flash flooding posing the greatest threats through 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the storm window opens at 2 p.m. Friday and will primarily impact areas including Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville, and Wytheville. Forecasters warn of gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines, with flash flooding likely in urban areas, creeks, and low-lying roads.

Communities like Lewisburg and Bluefield are also in the path of potential severe weather. With saturated ground from recent rain, flash flood risk is elevated. Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and check local alerts before traveling. Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power customers are advised to charge devices ahead of potential outages.

This is the second severe weather system to sweep through the region this week, and emergency managers urge residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings.

The severe threat is expected to taper after 10 p.m., but lingering showers could persist overnight. More storm chances return later this weekend.
