New York, NY – A dangerous line of severe thunderstorms is slamming into parts of New York City and northeastern New Jersey this evening, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and the potential for downed trees and power lines. The storm is moving east at 25 mph and could cause power outages in densely populated areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Upton, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 7:15 p.m. for Hudson and Union counties in New Jersey, as well as Kings (Brooklyn) and New York (Manhattan) counties in New York. Radar detected the storm over Bayonne at 6:39 p.m., tracking toward Jersey City and Manhattan’s Lower East Side by 6:45 p.m.

The primary hazard is damaging straight-line winds capable of snapping branches, toppling trees, and taking down utility lines. Residents are urged to remain indoors, away from windows, and avoid travel until the storm passes. Outdoor objects should be secured to prevent them from becoming airborne.

Officials warn the risk for additional severe weather could continue into the evening as unstable air lingers over the region. Stay tuned for further advisories if the threat persists.
