Clayton, NM – A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms is threatening parts of northeast New Mexico, the Oklahoma Panhandle, and the northwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle through 9 p.m. Saturday, bringing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, and brief tornadoes. Residents from Harding and Union counties in New Mexico to Cimarron County in Oklahoma and Dallam and Hartley counties in Texas should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and possible power outages.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes these counties until 9 p.m., with storms expected to develop quickly through late afternoon and into the evening. Emergency management officials urge drivers to stay off rural highways during the height of the storms, especially U.S. 56, U.S. 64, and U.S. 87, where visibility could drop to near zero.

Localized flooding, downed trees, and scattered power disruptions are likely as these storms move through. Residents should charge electronic devices, secure outdoor items, and remain weather-aware in case warnings are upgraded. Schools and weekend events may be affected, especially in Clayton, Dalhart, Boise City, and surrounding communities.

The severe threat will linger through Saturday night, and additional weather statements or warnings may follow if storms intensify.
