Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina

Norfolk, VA – A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect until 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, impacting several areas in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield.

The storms, moving east at 20 mph, were detected at 4:22 p.m. and are capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph. Areas expected to experience severe weather include Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk in Virginia, as well as Hertford, Perquimans, and Chowan counties in North Carolina.

The NWS advises that damaging winds could down trees and power lines, posing potential hazards. Locations such as Great Bridge, Kempsville, and Princess Anne are expected to be affected by 4:40 p.m., with additional impacts likely in South Mills, Hertford, and Winfall by 5:00 p.m.

Residents are urged to seek shelter in interior rooms on the lowest floors of sturdy buildings. Torrential rainfall associated with these storms may also lead to flash flooding, and drivers are advised to avoid flooded roadways.
