Chicago, IL – A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued this afternoon for parts of Cook and Will counties, with dangerous conditions expected through 4 p.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, radar indicated a severe thunderstorm over Monee at 3:26 p.m., moving northeast at 25 mph. The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Forecasters warned of potential damage to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees. Residents in affected areas are urged to seek shelter immediately in sturdy buildings and to avoid windows.
Communities likely to be impacted include Park Forest, Crete, Richton Park, Steger, Matteson, and University Park by 3:30 p.m. Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields are expected around 3:35 p.m., followed by Flossmoor, Sauk Village, and Ford Heights by 3:40 p.m. Homewood, Glenwood, and Thornton may see effects by 3:50 p.m. Other towns in the storm’s path include East Hazel Crest and South Chicago Heights.
The National Weather Service cautioned that large hail and cloud-to-ground lightning remain threats with this storm. Travelers are advised to delay trips until the system passes, and outdoor activities should be moved indoors.
