Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan residents should prepare for the potential of severe thunderstorms beginning late Friday, with damaging wind and hail threats spanning across multiple counties including Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a cold front moving in from the Midwest will bring scattered thunderstorms after 8 p.m. Friday night. There’s a 70-80% chance of thunderstorms across the region, with a slight risk of storms becoming severe. Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph, and hail greater than 1 inch in diameter is possible in some areas.

The threat zone includes Tri-Cities, the Thumb region, and much of central Lower Michigan. Friday’s daytime conditions will be partly sunny with highs in the upper 70s, followed by widespread showers and possible severe storms overnight.

Officials urge residents to stay alert and monitor forecasts through Friday. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, review emergency plans, and avoid travel during high wind events. Thunderstorms may form in clusters, lowering predictability and increasing the need for timely updates.

This pattern marks a significant shift from earlier calm weather, as Michigan enters a warming trend accompanied by increased thunderstorm activity.
