Chicago, IL – Strong and gusty onshore winds are causing waves of 4-7 feet along the shores of Lake Michigan, creating dangerous swimming conditions in northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. These hazardous conditions, which include life-threatening currents, are expected to last through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago, the high waves and dangerous currents make swimming extremely risky. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water and follow posted signs and advisories. The NWS predicts conditions will improve by Friday, but caution remains essential for anyone visiting the beaches along southern Lake Michigan.
The weather forecast for the region indicates mostly dry and pleasant conditions heading into the weekend. Highs will generally be in the mid-upper 70s to lower 80s, with cooler temperatures near Lake Michigan due to daily lake breezes. Thursday will see isolated morning sprinkles with temperatures ranging from 71-78°F, while Friday’s highs will reach between 74-81°F. The weekend will continue to be warm with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and mostly clear skies.
However, scattered shower and thunderstorm chances will return early next week. Monday’s forecast includes a 20-30% chance of precipitation with highs between 77-83°F. Beachgoers should remain vigilant and check local weather updates before heading to the shore.
