Dodge City, Kansas – Another round of severe thunderstorms could develop across parts of southwest and central Kansas Friday afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms are expected to develop between about 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the greatest risk focused east of U.S. Highway 283.
Communities including Pratt, Medicine Lodge, Kingman, and Great Bend may see the highest potential for severe weather during that time.
The primary hazards with stronger storms will be large hail and damaging wind gusts.
Meteorologists say hail between 1.5 and 2 inches in diameter may be possible in the strongest storms, which could damage vehicles, crops, and roofs.
Wind gusts up to around 65 mph could also accompany the storms, potentially bringing down tree limbs and causing scattered power outages.
While the tornado risk appears lower compared to other hazards, forecasters say a tornado cannot be completely ruled out if storms intensify.
Storms are expected to form during the afternoon hours across parts of western Kansas before moving east into central Kansas during the evening.
Areas farther west, including locations near Garden City, Liberal, and Ulysses, are expected to see a lower risk for severe storms.
In addition to hail and wind, some storms may produce brief heavy rainfall, though widespread flooding is not expected at this time.
Residents across southwest and central Kansas are encouraged to stay weather aware Friday afternoon and evening, especially if outdoor activities are planned.
Officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including mobile alerts, weather radios, or local media updates.
Drivers should also remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and reduced visibility if storms move through their area.
