Springfield, IL – Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to impact central Illinois on Thursday, bringing the risk of large hail and damaging winds throughout the evening and into the night.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, the storms may develop during the day Thursday, March 27, with the most severe activity expected through Thursday night. Gusts could reach up to 60 mph, and hail may grow as large as quarters. Counties including Sangamon, Macon, McLean, and Peoria are within the elevated risk zone.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 (Marginal) Risk for the region, warning that some thunderstorms may become strong enough to produce isolated severe weather conditions. While widespread severe weather is not expected, localized threats could disrupt travel and outdoor plans.

Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts throughout the day and have multiple methods of receiving warnings. Weather radios, smartphone apps, and local news outlets can help track changing conditions. The strongest storms are expected to subside before midnight, but lingering showers may continue into early Friday.

Officials urge people to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during active storms, and move indoors if thunder is heard.
