Abilene, Texas – Residents in the Big Country and northwest Concho Valley should prepare for severe thunderstorms beginning late Saturday afternoon and continuing through the night, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging winds over 60 mph, and a possible isolated tornado.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, the region faces a Slight to Marginal risk for severe weather, with storms expected to form to the west and intensify as they move east this evening. The highest potential for severe conditions centers on northern and western counties, including Haskell, Sterling, and portions of Coke and Taylor counties.

Localized storm activity could impact travel on U.S. Highway 277 and other major routes, with blowing debris and hail creating hazardous conditions. Power outages are possible where wind gusts exceed 60 mph. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors during active storms, secure outdoor items, and keep phones charged in case of outages.

This system marks one of the season’s first significant thunderstorm events for the region. The threat is expected to diminish overnight, but additional watches or warnings may be issued. Residents should stay alert to weather updates through Sunday morning.
