Hanford, CA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Sierra Nevada from Yosemite National Park to northern Kern County until 11 p.m. PDT Monday, with hazardous conditions expected to impact travel and outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, snowfall will continue through the evening, with snow levels dropping from 5,000 feet in the afternoon to between 3,500 and 4,000 feet by nightfall. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 12 inches are forecast, particularly in higher elevations. Strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, could further complicate conditions, potentially causing tree damage and road closures.
Affected areas include Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, and surrounding regions, including Wawona, Hume Lake, Lodgepole, and Huntington Lake. The advisory warns that travel could be very difficult to impossible, with dangerous conditions expected for the Monday evening commute.
Officials urge residents and travelers to exercise caution, slow down, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. For updated road conditions, motorists can dial 511 or check the California Department of Transportation website. Snow chains may be required on certain routes.
This late-season winter storm underscores the importance of preparedness, especially for those venturing into mountainous areas. Travelers should pack emergency supplies, including extra food, water, and blankets, in case of delays.
