Hastings, NE – A critical fire weather warning has been issued for southern South Dakota, much of central Nebraska, and northern Kansas, as strong winds and low humidity are expected on Wednesday. The National Weather Service forecasts sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph, which could cause fires to spread quickly in these dry conditions.
According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, the strongest winds and driest air will overlap the region’s most vulnerable areas. Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning and secure loose outdoor items. Travel may be hazardous, especially on U.S. Highway 83, where visibility could be reduced by blowing dust.
The elevated fire risk is expected to last through Wednesday night. Stay tuned to local weather updates and fire advisories.
