Sierra Mountains, CA – A series of small earthquakes shook California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains on Wednesday, prompting residents to report the tremors. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded three quakes in the area, sparking interest in the region’s seismic activity.

According to the USGS, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck 12 kilometers east of Coso Junction at 10:36 a.m. PST. This quake had a shallow depth of 1.5 kilometers, which often intensifies the shaking felt by nearby communities. Shortly after, two smaller tremors—both with magnitudes of 2.6—followed southwest of Lone Pine and west-southwest of Toms Place. These quakes, which occurred around 6:41 p.m. PST, registered depths of 5.2 kilometers and 7.6 kilometers, respectively.

Seismic experts encourage residents to report any shaking experiences via the USGS “Did You Feel It?” tool. Collecting these reports helps scientists understand how quakes impact various areas, improving future earthquake response and preparedness.

Though the tremors caused no reported damage, they serve as a reminder of California’s active fault lines. Residents are advised to review earthquake safety measures as seismic events remain a persistent risk.
