Seminole County, FL – Detectives in Seminole County fatally shot a suspect Tuesday afternoon in Longwood during an investigation tied to child exploitation, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. near Hatfield Court and East Wekiva Trail. Detectives had been conducting surveillance on Gary Wayne Guckenberger, 68, after executing a residential search warrant earlier in the day. According to SCSO, investigators discovered hundreds of child pornography images, multiple firearms, and seized electronic devices during the search. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for Guckenberger.

Authorities say Guckenberger exited his home armed with a fully loaded firearm in his waistband when he encountered a detective. Despite a verbal warning not to reach for the weapon, investigators allege he attempted to draw it. In response, the detective fired, striking the suspect.

The sheriff’s office reported that life-saving measures were initiated immediately until Seminole County Fire Department personnel arrived. Guckenberger was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Sheriff Dennis Lemma addressed the case, emphasizing community responsibility: “We have a responsibility as a society and as a profession to protect our most vulnerable. Our children, who are the victims of these heinous crimes, are at the top of that list.”

As per standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The detective has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
