Sellersburg, Indiana — An alleged police impersonation triggered an investigation that led to a felony arrest in Washington County.

According to the Indiana State Police, a 42-year-old Sellersburg man was arrested after allegedly posing as an Indiana State Police detective during a phone call to the Salem Police Department.

The investigation began in late January when Salem Police Chief Eric Mills reported a suspicious call to Indiana State Police Detective Travis Baker. Investigators say the caller contacted a Salem Police dispatcher, claimed to be Detective Matthew Busick of the Indiana State Police, and urgently requested to speak with the police chief.

Police say the caller further requested that a police K-9 unit be sent to his location, claiming federal officers were present and K-9 assistance was required. Because Detective Busick was off duty, Salem Police contacted him directly. Busick confirmed he had not made the call, investigators said.

Following the confirmation, Detective Baker continued the investigation and sought an arrest warrant. Authorities allege the caller was Michael Edward Mull of Sellersburg.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Indiana State Police troopers served the warrant on Mull at the Scott County Jail, where he was already being held on unrelated charges. Mull was charged with one count of impersonating a public servant, a Level 6 felony under Indiana law.

Indiana State Police encouraged anyone with information about this incident or other suspected cases of police impersonation to contact Detective Travis Baker at the Indiana State Police Sellersburg Post at 800-872-6743.

All subjects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

For commuters and public-facing workers, police note that impersonation cases can involve false emergency requests that divert law enforcement resources.
