Seattle, Wash. – Much of western Washington is entering a stretch of unusually hot late-August weather, with some locations climbing into the 90s through Tuesday and daily records in jeopardy. Olympia led the region Sunday with a high near 95 degrees, surpassing a long-standing mark from 1982.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, temperatures will remain above normal into Tuesday before a cooling trend returns midweek. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is forecast to hold near 87 degrees both Monday and Tuesday, while Everett-Paine Field could challenge record highs with readings in the mid-80s. Port Angeles and Bellingham will stay slightly cooler, but highs in the upper 70s to low 80s are still well above seasonal averages.
The agency urged outdoor workers and vulnerable residents to take precautions. OSHA recommends drinking water every 20 minutes, taking breaks in shaded areas, and watching for signs of heat illness, including dizziness and nausea.
Road surfaces, especially in Olympia and Tacoma, may become slick from heat-related oil buildup, and residents are encouraged to limit strenuous afternoon activity. Cooling centers are open in several counties, including King and Pierce.
The heat risk will ease by Wednesday, with highs falling back into the 70s across most of western Washington. Additional advisories could be issued if humidity lingers or winds shift.
