SEATTLE – An early-season burst of mountain snow is coating the higher peaks of the North Cascades Sunday, creating slick conditions for drivers heading toward Mount Baker and nearby passes. The National Weather Service in Seattle said a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. PDT for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

According to the Weather Service, total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected above 4,000 feet, with the heaviest bands falling through late afternoon. Mount Baker Ski Area, Washington Pass, and Hart’s Pass will see the most significant impacts as colder air filters in behind a Pacific front. Travel along State Route 542 (the Mount Baker Highway) and adjacent forest roads may become slick or snow-covered by midday.

The Washington State Department of Transportation advised motorists to check pass conditions and carry traction devices if traveling into the high country. Sudden changes in visibility and roadway conditions are likely above the snow line, especially near Artist Point and Heather Meadows.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will taper overnight as skies partially clear, but temperatures will remain cold enough for icy spots on mountain roads into early Monday.
