SEATTLE, Wash. – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit Counties, where another 8 to 24 inches of snow is expected through Friday morning, creating dangerous mountain travel and possible power outages in higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, snow will continue to pile up along Highway 20 west of Washington Pass and near Mount Baker, where the heaviest accumulations are forecast. “The highest elevations could receive nearly three feet of snow through Friday morning,” forecasters said.

Travel conditions will be very difficult to impossible, especially overnight and early Thursday, as snow rates intensify. The Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes across mountain passes will likely be affected. Chains, traction tires, or all-wheel-drive vehicles will be required for travel in higher terrain.

Wind gusts and heavy snow may also lead to isolated power outages, particularly near ski lodges and rural communities. The Washington State Department of Transportation advises checking WSDOT pass reports before traveling through the Cascades and delaying nonessential trips when possible.

Temperatures will stay below freezing in the high country, with snow tapering Friday as a weak ridge builds inland.
