Rain lashes windows while gusts bend treetops across western Washington as dangerous Weather Alerts remain active. Conditions are already disrupting daily routines and could complicate Christmas Travel and post-holiday returns.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for Seattle and much of Puget Sound through early evening. South winds of 20 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph, are expected. According to the National Weather Service, saturated soils increase the risk of falling trees and power line damage. Widespread power outages remain possible.
At the same time, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains active through midday. Morning high tide may push water 1.75 to 2.25 feet above ground level in low-lying coastal areas. Parking lots, shoreline roads, and parks could briefly flood, especially near Elliott Bay and exposed Puget Sound shorelines.
Wet pavement and gusty crosswinds will make driving difficult. High-profile vehicles may struggle on bridges and north-south roadways. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Avoid driving through standing water, even if it appears shallow.
Temperatures remain mild for late December, hovering in the low to mid-40s. However, pooled water may refreeze overnight later this week if temperatures dip. That raises concerns for black ice, especially on shaded roads and overpasses.
Looking ahead, unsettled weather lingers into the weekend. Light rain chances continue, and clouds stick around for travelers returning home Saturday, December 27. While no snow is expected in Seattle, winter conditions tighten their grip across the region.
Plan flexible travel windows. Secure outdoor items. Charge devices now. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset.
