Charleston, West Virginia – Flash flooding is possible this afternoon and evening across much of West Virginia and southeastern Ohio, with torrential rain threatening road safety and low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Flood Watch is in effect from noon today through late Saturday evening. The alert covers central, eastern, and northern West Virginia—including Charleston, Clarksburg, Weston, and Summersville—along with parts of southeastern Ohio such as Athens and Gallipolis.

The primary threat stems from excessive rainfall that could overwhelm drainage systems and rivers. Urban areas, creeks, and flood-prone valleys are especially vulnerable. Communities along the Kanawha and Little Kanawha Rivers should remain alert, especially during peak rain hours between 2 and 8 p.m.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains the key safety message. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and consider alternate routes if flash flooding blocks your path.

The Flood Watch may be upgraded depending on rainfall totals and storm development. Stay tuned to local emergency management and NWS updates through the evening.
