La Crosse, WI – Southerly winds up to 40 mph combined with near-record temperatures and dry conditions are prompting an elevated fire danger across southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and parts of western Wisconsin today.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the lack of recent rainfall and strong winds could cause fires to spread rapidly, particularly in open grasslands and agricultural areas. The advisory urges residents to avoid outdoor burning and to report any fires immediately to local authorities.

Forecasters warn that the highest risk area includes Rochester, MN, and extends south toward Decorah, IA, where humidity levels remain low. Temperatures across the region are expected to reach near-record highs this afternoon, further increasing the risk.

The NWS notes that “any grass or crop fire could quickly spread,” especially across the open and unshaded areas of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. Even small sparks from machinery or outdoor grilling could ignite dry vegetation under these conditions.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning until winds decrease and humidity improves later this week.
