Scranton, PA – Drivers across Northeast Pennsylvania could encounter sudden downpours and wind gusts strong enough to snap branches between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, creating hazardous travel on major corridors like I-81 and Route 6.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday afternoon into the early evening, with the strongest cells capable of producing locally damaging winds, small hail, and bursts of heavy rainfall. While the highest concentration of severe storms will stay farther south, areas near Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton sit within a Level 2 risk zone.

Communities including Pittston, Tunkhannock, and Honesdale may see brief visibility drops under one mile during heavier showers. Ponding on roads and rapid water buildup in low-lying areas could slow the evening commute. Utility crews may also respond to isolated outages if wind gusts intensify.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours. If thunder roars, move indoors immediately.

Storm activity should weaken after sunset, but additional advisories could be issued if conditions intensify Sunday afternoon.
