Binghamton, New York – Winter weather is returning to central New York and northeastern Pennsylvania today, bringing a combination of snow, mixed precipitation, and ice before lake-effect snow develops late tonight and continues into Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, scattered snow showers are expected this morning across central New York. As temperatures briefly warm this afternoon, precipitation will transition to a wintry mix, including freezing rain and freezing drizzle in some areas, before colder air arrives later today.

Forecasters say a warm front moving through the region will allow surface temperatures to hover near freezing, creating the potential for patchy icing, particularly east of Interstate 81. Ice accumulations through tonight are generally expected to remain light, around 0.01 inches, but even minor glazing can make roads slick, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces.

Two Winter Weather Advisories are currently in effect. One advisory focuses on mixed precipitation and ice accumulation east of I-81, impacting parts of eastern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania this afternoon into the overnight hours. A second advisory covers moderate snowfall, mainly across central New York, from this morning through Wednesday night.

Snowfall totals through Wednesday night are forecast to range from 1 to 3 inches across much of the region, with higher totals possible north and east of the Southern Tier as lake-effect snow redevelops late tonight and persists Wednesday. Areas closer to Lake Ontario may see locally higher amounts where lake-effect bands become established.

Roadways including I-81, I-88, Route 17, and I-90 may become hazardous at times due to changing precipitation types and reduced visibility. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate most noticeably late today and overnight.

The National Weather Service urges drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions, particularly during the evening and overnight hours.
